Web Preference has worked with Customs Clearance Ltd for a number of years, most recently in the redesign of the company's website (produced by Graphik Distinction). During that time, the business has become increasingly global, recently opening an office in Hong Kong, to service their customers and associates in China and the surrounding regions. The company has also employed a new sales and marketing executive to develop the Far East region.

To this end, Customs Clearance wanted the main website - http://customsclearanceuk.com - to be multi-lingual.

We have adapted the admin interface and the front end code to allow the company to easily add as many languages going forward as they need. At the outset, this is being restricted to simplified Chinese, but the longer term aim is to develop additional languages.

Booking and certification system for NDTG

Having previously built the website for the National Demolition Training Group (NDTG), Web Preference was commissioned to build a bespoke system to create bookings and manage candidate achievements. At the current time, the site is only available for internal purposes but this may be made available to member companies of the NDTG in the future.

The NDTG provides specific and relevant training opportunities to demolition workers and administers the CCDO Card Scheme in the UK. The NDTG is also a CPCS Accredited Centre and an Accredited NVQ Centre offering Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications.

The system allows the NDTG to create a booking, and assign member companies and candidates to it. Once the booking has been made it can be edited to allow for additional companies and candidates, and also completed. When completed, the candidate records are updated accordingly to reflect the level of training or qualification achieved. Completion can also be undertaken at the candidate level (individually). There is also a CRM facility to allow the NDTG to keep track of conversations and updates with member companies and candidates. For the courses, the system allows for the creation of the certificates on the fly which can then be printed.

Previously all of the booking actvity was undertaken via separate Excel spreadsheets which were difficult to administer across the Group. Now, all of the booking and certification activity is centralised, making for significant efficiency gains.

Revamped website for Jeffrey Jaye Pictures

Web Preference built the first website for leading landscape photographer Jeffrey Jaye, in 2007. A new site has just been launched, using the core graphics from the original site but utilising our latest content management system. This enables the site to be updated much more easily by the client, and it also significantly more search engine friendly than its predecessor.

The home page features a custom animation showcasing some of Jeffrey Jaye's best pictures and allows promotion of the latest sets and a picture of the month, both of which change randomly on a page refresh. The site is built using HTML 5 and attempts to reduce page loading times by concantenating the JavaScript and minifying both it and the CSS.

New Web Preference website

Web Preference has launched its new website today.

Built using HTML5 and incorporating some of the latest CSS3 properties (which are only available to users with more advanced browsers), the site also makes extensive use of the powerful jQuery JavaScript framework to enhance user experience.

As with all of our current site builds, the urls are very search engine friendly - appearing to be static html pages to search engine robots. In addition, we have created redirects from all of our previous pages to the corresponding pages of the new site, until Google has reindexed.

In addition to the core pages module of our content management system, there are modules for project work, news, testimonials and link partners. A Google XML site map can be produced at any time from the admin, while a scheduled task performs a daily database back up. We have also minified and concantenated the CSS and JavaScript files in order to minimise page download times.

Jobs board added to demolition-jobs.co.uk

Demolition Jobs was launched in Feburary 2009 with support from the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC). The aim was to help unemployed workers in the demolition industry return to work. Unlike other job sites, the site enabled employers to search for workers who had previously created an account on the site and uploaded their details.

Now, with support from Humres, Web Preference has added a traditional jobs board on the site which allows for employer vacancies to be posted, and for interested candidates to apply. Workers can search for a job by NFDC region and role. Workers can be kept informed of new jobs being posted to the site by subscribing to the dynamic RSS feed. The application process is anonymous - no company details are ever revealed, and the application is sent directly to the company who has posted the job.

The site is being promoted by Demolition News.

Hosting partner combats the Gumblar virus

Over the last year there has been a substantial increase in the number of sites on the internet that have been hacked due to viruses that steal FTP credentials from user's home computers. The hackers then use these credentials to insert hidden code within your website.

Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumblar for more information on this type of attack.

To reduce the significant threat from these viruses our hosting partner has developed a solution which will make such attacks extremely difficult. The solution is to lock FTP when it's not in use.

Our customers will be able to unlock FTP accounts by either selecting a period of time after which the lock will remain in force, or by nominating an IP address that has permanent FTP access.

These security measures will ensure that the majority of sites have FTP locked, greatly reducing the risk of having our clients' websites infected.

Having previously launched the public website for Shere in September 2009, Web Preference was commissioned to build an intranet site for the company later that year. The intranet site is a key tool in educating and maintaining communications between the management and employees in the business.

Built on our bespoke content management system to enable it to be easily updated, the site provides additional functionality in the form of: Events, News, Presentations/Downloads and an image library. The latter is particularly important since Shere maintain a huge image library of their machines and installations, and it is important for employees to have access to this collateral, often for marketing purposes. Thumbnail images can be found via a search facility, and hovering over a thumbnail produces a larger version on the screen; clicking on the thumnail image, the user can then download a very high resolution image to the desktop.

In the admin, we have also restricted access to various parts of the site which can be allocated to uses by the master adminstrator.

Dynamic Image Text Replacement

Tired of using standard fonts for your headings?

We have utilised several dynamic image text replacement techniques for several projects recently - namely Principle360 and Julie Lawford. In both cases, the font we used is Myriad Pro Bold.

The techniques from an article first posted on A List Apart; http://www.alistapart.com/articles/dynatext (we used this for the Julie Lawford site). This method does rely upon JavaScript, whereas another method which can be found at http://www.artypapers.com/csshelppile/pcdtr does not, and uses output buffering to produce a very quick response time. However, despite the limitations of the Rosenberger method, we have found it more reliable, particularly for dynamic pages, and this is our preferred choice going forward.
